* There is movement in the unionizing effort. View the website (click here)
* Working to ensure the grievance procedures are more transparent
* Rural Affairs Committee has submitted a motion relating to geographic differential at UAF. It passed unanimously and will be forwarded to Staff Alliance.
Staff Alliance is currently working on the Tobacco Free Hiring proposal and the Tuition Benefit Change. There will be major details coming in March. The general consensus is that UA is moving towards a tobacco free campus.
The University of Alaska regents believe that “the opportunity for faculty, staff and students to participate in the governance of the university is important to its effective operation.” UAF Staff Council is your “opportunity” to participate in governance and contribute to the future of our university.

Alaska Public Employees Association (APEA)
A representative from the Alaska Public Employees Association (APEA) was in attendance at the June Staff Council meeting. She informed staff council that the APEA union is now contemplating organizing the non-represented supervisory staff at the university. The APEA has received a list from Human Resources of staff members the university considers to be supervisors.
An email, with a survey, will be sent out to these individuals. The purpose of the email is to determine whether or not there is a climate to organize. The union is requesting everyone who receives the survey to complete and submit for processing. The representative has stated that if there is not a desire amongst the supervisory staff to organize the issue will be dropped, but the only way to determine this is to receive completed surveys by all affected staff.

Union Organizing Activities
An arbitrator has ruled that only Alaska State Employees Association (ASEA) can proceed with unionization efforts at UA. They have filed a petition clarifying the employee group they are trying to organize. A copy is available on the Statewide Labor Relations site (click here). You can also view ASEA site (click here).
UA Labor and Employee Relations website is updated regularly. It has all the communication between the University and the union organizations. ASEA filed a revised petition April 13, 2010 to include Exempt and Non-exempt staff who do not hold supervisory positions. This site has great information for review.
The number of employees not represented between Exempt and Non-exempt is about 2500. UAF, UAA and UAS staff make up this number. UAF and ASEA will now begin the process of determining who are supervisors and who are not. Once this process is completed it will then be determined whether ASEA has enough signature cards or if more need to be obtained to have a vote. It is unclear at this time how long the process may take.
Whether you are for the union or against the union be informed. If it goes to a vote please remember to let your voice be heard and VOTE.
